Climbing without a rope
Bouldering is not a new climbing method. In fact, this form of climbing has roots going all the way back to the 1850s, where it was used as play and training. The word «bouldering» comes from the English word «boulder», meaning a block of stone. In short, bouldering is about climbing on large rocks and crags without using a rope – using only your own skills and climbing shoes.

Is bouldering difficult?
One of the great advantages of bouldering is that you can start right away without learning complex rope knots or taking a course. All you need is climbing shoes and perhaps a little chalk for a better grip, and you're ready to take on the bouldering wall.
Is bouldering safe?
Many people ask whether bouldering is safe. We put thick mats under every boulder, so you land softly if you lose your grip or jump down when you finish a boulder. The name of the mats depends on whether you're bouldering outdoors or indoors: crash pads (outdoors), fall mats (indoors).
What does it mean to “climb a boulder”?
When you finish a boulder, we say you've «climbed a boulder». A boulder can be anything from mastering a single, challenging move to climbing straight up, in a zigzag or diagonally across the bouldering wall.
Climbing vs. bouldering
Bouldering is like a puzzle, where both mental and physical skills have to work together to complete the whole picture! In traditional climbing we call it a «climbing route», while in bouldering it's called a «problem». Each problem requires different moves and techniques to reach the top. But you don't need to be a pro or an expert at problem-solving to boulder! Many people have to practise quite a bit before they manage to climb a boulder.
Difficulty grades in bouldering
At Høyt Under Taket Tønsberg we use colour codes to guide you to routes that match your skill level. Each colour represents a difficulty grade on the Fontainebleau scale, which starts with easy routes and gradually increases in difficulty. For example, a grade 3 might suit beginners, while a route graded as a 7 is for those who have done a lot of bouldering.
Indoor bouldering at Høyt Under Taket Tønsberg
Indoor bouldering is an excellent introduction to all forms of climbing. Bouldering builds core strength and gives you better body awareness and movement control. It's also a social activity where you can bond with friends and instructors. Our bouldering walls are lower than the climbing walls, which makes it easier to communicate with others while you boulder.
