Climbing without a rope = bouldering

Bouldering is a climbing method with roots back to the 1850s. Back then bouldering was used as play and training – and at HUT Letohallen we carry on this tradition! The word «bouldering» comes from the English word «boulder», meaning a block of stone. “Bouldering” therefore describes the activity of climbing on large rocks and crags without a rope.

Here you can read about bouldering and the history of bouldering

Bouldering at HUT Letohallen

Many people are curious about bouldering. So here we've gathered the most common questions that sum up bouldering in a quick 1-2-3.

Is bouldering difficult?

Remember the climbing you did as a child? If so, you have a head start! If you did other things as a child, bouldering is an activity that's easy to pick up. You use your hands to grip the holds we've set up, and move your body in a natural way. The rest you'll learn as you climb!

One of the great advantages of bouldering is that you can get started without learning complicated knots or taking a course. All you need is climbing shoes, and you're ready to take on the wall!

It's also common to use chalk for a slightly better grip!

Is it safe to boulder?

Bouldering walls are lower than climbing walls. At HUT Letohallen we use thick mats under every boulder to absorb the impact if you lose your grip or jump down after finishing a boulder. We call these mats «fall mats» when we boulder indoors, and «crash pads» when we boulder outdoors. Your safety is our top priority, and we do everything we can to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience with us.

Why do people say «climb a boulder»?

When you hear someone say they're going to «climb a boulder», it means they're going to complete a climbing route on a low wall without a rope or safety gear. «Climbing a boulder» can be anything from mastering a single but challenging move, to completing the whole route.

Is bouldering good exercise?

Bouldering gives your whole body a good workout and offers a range of benefits:

  • You get stronger: You use your muscles in lots of different ways, and you can get stronger in your arms, legs and core.
  • Better movement control: When you boulder, you have to learn to move in an efficient and controlled way. This can give you a greater understanding of how your body works and how you can move in a more coordinated way.
  • For the body and the mind: Bouldering is a bit like a puzzle, where you have to use both mental and physical skills to find the best solution for climbing a boulder.
  • New friends: Bouldering is a perfect activity for meeting new people and challenging each other.

You can of course also bring your own friends or family bouldering – everyone can join in here!
